It’s the new year and everyone is determined to make positive changes in their lives. Often, people resolve to eat cleaner and healthier, but then the day comes that you wake up late and didn’t meal prep the night before and have to resort to buying your lunch at the fast food joint down the street from the office. And so the story goes, it’s not that people don’t want to eat healthy, but sometimes life gets in the way and a quick eat trumps a healthier alternative.
With people’s increased interest in eating cleaner, however, the number of restaurants offering healthier options is increasing. Vitagene recently did a study on the healthiest cities in America for dining out, focusing on juice and smoothie bars, sushi restaurants, vegetarian restaurants, vegan restaurants, and raw food restaurants. All these locations have quick options and can easily replace a fast food run.
So what’s the best city in the US to get a quick, healthy bite? Per capita, Atlanta boasted the most healthy-eating spots with 151.97 healthy-eating restaurants per 100k people. It is best for juice and smoothie bars, having 63.34 of the restaurants per 100k people. Following Atlanta, and comprising the top three cities for healthy eating, were Hartford and Las Vegas.
Atlanta not only had the highest number of juice and smoothie bars per capita, but also sushi restaurants with 61.07 per 100k people. If you’re more into vegetarian and vegan eats, Hartford is the place for you with 35.66 vegetarian restaurants and 26.74 vegan restaurants per 100k people. While raw food restaurants aren’t quite as popular as the aforementioned healthy-food stops, in Riverside you can find 4.58 of the restaurants per 100k people.
These cities all boast a record number of healthy places to stop for a meal, but what are the worst places to try to start a health kick? With only 3.11 healthy restaurants per 100k people, Washington D.C. is the worst city in the US for healthy eating. The capital is followed by Indianapolis and Houston. If you are determined to change your eating habits for the better, these three cities may be ones to avoid if you can (or at least while you’re there, be sure to pack your own lunch).
