One of the biggest drawbacks of living in an apartment is the lack of customization you can have. When it comes to making your space your own, it can be tough sometimes while living in a place that you might only call home for a year or two. But, there are a number of ways you can still be trendy, stylish, and keep up with what’s hot in interior design — all of this while still keeping it true to you.
Luckily, the team at Joybird, a midcentury modern furniture company, asked the experts so we don’t have to. They reached out to interior design pros and asked then about the big trends to be on the lookout for in 2018. Here’s what they had to say that might help you if you’re living in an apartment:
Bea Pila, an interior designer, said that reds are going to be in this year. Something cool that she pointed out specifically is that it doesn’t have to mean changes to the walls or even a monochromatic scheme. Adding in pops of red in window treatments or a statement piece can add that flavor to the room.
Leslie Myrick suggested that antique pieces are the way to go in 2018. It’s a trend that’s been on the rise as of late and this might be a year that it thrives even more. Reviving an old piece and using it or displaying it can be a conversation starter and make a room special. Additionally, if you choose to revive a piece yourself, it can be a rewarding experience. It can make the piece even more special and valuable to you.
Carole Marcotte has a simple suggestion: Keep it cozy. Cozy living and cozy spaces are on the rise and it’s easy to see why. People want to feel at home when they’re at home. Formal dining or living rooms have their place, but how much do you really use them? If you’re tight on space in your apartment or home, you’re going to want the rooms that you do have to feel comfortable. To make this happen, she suggests things like reading nooks, chunky throws, and plenty of pillows.
So, if you’re looking to keep your small space trendy but still true to you, there are a number of ways to do it. Above are just a few ways that the experts recommend. Use these as a springboard for other ideas and always keep trying new things.
